Big fall in no of Lone parents on JSA – but still 10% of JSA claimant count

There has been a dramatic fall  (25%) in the number of lone parents on JSA. Down from a peak of over 156,000 in February 2013 to less than 120,000 in March 2014. This mirrors the general fall in JSA claimants, with Lone Parents remaining  at 10% of the total claimant count.

The largest fall was in the London region where there are now 30% fewer claimants and the smallest in Wales were the fall was 19%.

– Gender: Women still make up 90% of Lone Parents on JSA.
Ethnicity: 75% are of lone parents on JSA are white, 10% Black and 6% asian.
Age: the vast majority of lone parents on JSA (88%) are aged between 25 and 49 with only 5% under 25.
