JSA claimants down – but lone parents on JSA up by 4500 – today’s stats

Whilst the latest JSA figures show a drop in claimants, the lone parent figures show a different picture: a steady and continuing rise made up of people who are new to the benefit because of the recent benefit changes and others who are joining due to the recession.

There were 158,500 lone parents on JSA in February (the figures are a month behind the other stats). As expected, the largest rise was amongst those with five and six year olds, accounting for almost half of the total. But there was a similar  increases in those with children aged between seven and 16, and a steady rise in those with children under five (up 25% in the year).
