Lone parents on JSA up 6000 in one month – majority now have children at Primary school

The number of Lone Parents on JSA continues to rise, up again in this months figures* by 6000. But the demographic is changing.

Until the beginning of the year most lone parents on JSA had children aged 10 and over, mainly at secondary school, but now the majority of lone parents on JSA have children under 10, and so at Primary school.

Having children at primary school means that parents are generally more intent on working part time and require more childcare, especially after school and during holidays.

*These current figures are for August 2012
