On the same day the Government is announcing that they are going to change the definition of poverty, IDS – a Cabinet Minister on a mission – has told parents that their children would be less poor if they were in work*. Which is actually quite patronising to the parents I work with who are desperate to get a job.
What we need if parents are to work is straightforward.
- More Flexible working,
- Affordable, high-quality childcare for children up to 14.
- Support to gain basic qualifications.
- A benefits system that does not penalise people in work
And of course – an economy that is growing.
