Ending poverty – it’s not the theory it’s the practice that needs to change – new blog

On the same day the Government is announcing that  they are going to change the definition of poverty, IDS –  a Cabinet Minister on a mission – has told parents that their children would be less poor if they were in work*. Which is actually quite patronising to the parents I work with who are desperate to get a job.

What we need if parents are to work is straightforward.

  • More Flexible working,
  • Affordable, high-quality childcare for children up to 14.
  • Support to gain basic qualifications.
  • A benefits system that does not penalise people in work

And of course – an economy that is growing.
